i very recently purchased a 89 kawasaki 650 sx and i took it out on the water yesterday and it rode good . but i think i had a battery problem .. but while i was floating out on the water my whole nose filled up with water and was completely submerged.. is there some kind of plug i am over looking or something pleas anyone help...

I would check the hood seal first of all. Try to pay attention to the water line while you are floating and see if it is going in there. If the seal is good, take it out of the water and raise it up. Make sure that it is flat and put some water in it and see if the hull leaks any were. There are no other seals on a 89. Might want to check the seal around the drive shaft too.

As for your charging problem:

Get a voltmeter, simple rule of thumb for all 12V charging systems:

A fully charged battery should read 12.2 - 12.8 V when the engine is not running.

When running, it should read 13.2 - 13.8 V. More on the low side at idle and on the higher side at high rpm (depending of the sophistication of the voltage reg system).

By doing this you will determin if the VR system is defective or not. If you get 13V or so at all rpm you can then chase a flaky bulb, connection, etc.

Most likely a defective VR but verify first.
